Sony is developing an AI-powered prototype of Aloy from its *Horizon Forbidden West* game, revealed via an internal video leaked to The Verge. The demo, created by Sony’s Advanced Technology Group with Guerrilla Games, lets players converse with Aloy through voice prompts using OpenAI’s Whisper, GPT-4, and Llama 3 models. Sony’s proprietary Emotional Voice Synthesis (EVS) and Mockingbird animation tech power her speech and facial movements. While shown on PC, parts of the system reportedly run smoothly on PS5 hardware.
The video was removed from YouTube after publication due to a copyright claim by Muso, a firm representing PlayStation. The project highlights Sony’s exploration of AI in gaming amid industry-wide experiments by rivals like NVIDIA (Ace technology) and Microsoft (Muse AI). Concerns persist over AI’s impact on game development jobs and creativity, as generative tools grow in use—49% of GDC 2024 respondents reported workplace adoption.
Sony has not yet commented on the leak or its plans for the AI tech beyond internal demos.
