Sony Unveils RX1R III, a $5,100 Compact Camera with 61MP Sensor

After nearly a decade in development, Sony has finally released its long-awaited compact camera, the RX1R III. Priced at $5,100, it takes on the likes of Fujifilm’s GFX100RF and Leica’s Q3.

The 35mm full-frame camera boasts a 61MP Exmor R sensor, which promises low noise and high dynamic range. It also features Sony’s latest image processing technology to deliver improved image quality.

Measuring just 17 ounces, the RX1R III is designed for street photographers and serious amateurs who want a portable camera. The camera’s compact size is largely due to its Zeiss Sonnar T 35mm f2 lens, which sits partly inside the body.

Key features of the RX1R III include:

* A macro ring for up-close shooting
* Sony’s “Step Crop Shooting” function for variable focal lengths
* Improved image processing engine with Bionz XR and AI processors
* Electronic shake reduction and 693 phase-detection AF points

The camera also lacks optical low-pass filter, which can cause moire and other artifacts. It features a fixed electronic viewfinder and rear display but no in-body or optical stabilization.

For video, the RX1R III can handle 4K 30 fps with 10-bit 4:2:2 color sampling, as well as 1080p at up to 120 fps. However, it lacks log mode.

The RX1R III will go on pre-order soon for $5,100, with accessories including a thumb grip, body case, and lens hood available for an additional cost.
