Sony has officially released the RX1R III, a premium compact camera that builds on its predecessors’ design and integrates the latest advancements from the company’s imaging ecosystem. Designed for professionals and enthusiasts seeking uncompromising full-frame image quality in a highly portable form factor, the RX1R III addresses previous limitations, such as autofocus performance and modern usability features.
The camera boasts a 61MP back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS sensor paired with the BIONZ XR image processor. The fixed ZEISS Sonnar T* 35mm F2 lens delivers edge-to-edge sharpness and premium optical performance. AI-powered subject recognition enhances autofocus, recognizing and tracking human and animal eyes, heads, bodies, and even cars, trains, and airplanes.
In addition to improved autofocus, the RX1R III features a dedicated Step Crop Shooting function, allowing users to toggle between digital focal length equivalents of 35mm, 50mm, and 70mm. The camera also includes Creative Looks that apply to both stills and video, including filmic profiles like FL2 for subdued tones and FL3 for punchier, saturated colors.
The RX1R III has a compact design with a magnesium alloy body, recessed dials, and a flat surface. The updated grip and body texture aim to improve handheld stability, while the integrated 2.36-million-dot XGA OLED EVF offers 0.70x magnification. Battery life is rated for up to 300 shots, powered by the NP-FW50 battery.
In line with Sony’s “Road to Zero” sustainability initiative, the RX1R III is produced in facilities powered by 100% renewable energy. The camera also includes accessibility features, such as a screen reader and menu magnification functions, to improve usability for visually impaired users.
The RX1R III will be available in July 2025 at a retail price of $5,099.99 USD, with accessories following in August 2025.
