South African police recently discovered a massive illicit meth lab on a farm in Mpumalanga province, yielding $20 million worth of crystal meth and arresting five North American citizens. The bust was the result of a tip-off about suspicious activities at the farm in Oudehoutkloof, Volksrust.
During a search, police found precursor chemicals, manufacturing equipment, and ammunition, as well as large quantities of packed methamphetamine in buckets and lunchboxes stored in freezers. Five suspects were taken into custody after attempting to flee on foot, all of whom face possible drug and immigration-related charges.
The farm caretaker, who is South African, was also arrested for possession of ammunition. Two other suspects believed to be from West African countries fled the scene. The police are dismantling the lab, saying it’s a step in the right direction to rid Mpumalanga of drugs.
