A South African court has found a mother, Kelly Smith, and her accomplices guilty of kidnapping and trafficking her 6-year-old daughter, Joshlin. The case drew nationwide attention after Joshlin went missing in February 2024. The witnesses stated that Smith had sold the child to a traditional healer for $1,100 due to her “eyes and skin.” The court did not reveal who the girl was sold to or why.
The mother’s family is still seeking answers about Joshlin’s whereabouts. Kelly Smith expressed anger and frustration, saying she only wants her grandchild back, regardless of the length of time her loved ones spend in jail. Western Cape Police Commissioner General Thembisile Patekile stated that police are still searching for the missing child, while acknowledging the justice served through the guilty verdict.
The three convicted individuals will be held in custody ahead of sentencing.
