The University of South Carolina baseball team fell short against Clemson, losing 5-3 in the first game of a three-game set Friday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. This was Carolina’s first loss of the season.
Collin Priest got the Tigers on the board with a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning. Clemson scored two more runs in the second before Carolina tied it up with three runs in the third. Nolan Nawrocki added to the scoreboard with his fifth sacrifice fly, and Talmadge LeCroy hit a two-run double later in the frame.
Jarren Purify gave Clemson the lead back with a solo home run in the seventh inning. However, the Gamecocks managed to put a runner on in the ninth. Max Kaufer’s fly ball was caught at the fence, sealing the win for Clemson.
In relief, Brandon Stone pitched 4.2 innings and allowed three hits and one run while striking out six batters with no walks. The loss went to Matthew Becker, who had five strikeouts but also walked five batters and allowed four runs in just over two innings.
Talmadge LeCroy led the Gamecocks’ offense with two hits and two RBIs, snapping his 11-game hit streak in the process. Carolina will look to bounce back against Clemson on Saturday at Fluor Field in Greenville.
