South Carolina Claims Share of SEC Championship, SEC Seed

South Carolina’s Tessa Johnson scored 16 points in a 78-66 win over Kentucky on Sunday, helping the No. 6 team claim a share of the Southeastern Conference regular-season championship. The victory also gave the Gamecocks the No. 1 seed for this week’s SEC tournament.

A coin flip by SEC commissioner Greg Sankey during halftime determined South Carolina would be the top seed. Texas, which defeated Florida 72-46, finished with the same record as the Gamecocks but will play in the later semifinal slot.

South Carolina coach Dawn Staley expressed surprise and slight disappointment at having their fate decided by a coin flip. The team now enjoys an advantage of playing first on Friday, giving them more rest before the tournament’s semifinals.

LSU, seeded third, may have an easier path to the final if they face Texas in the semifinals. The Tigers will be without star Flau’Jae Johnson due to a shin injury, which averages 18.9 points per game.
