South Carolina Gets No. 1 Seed After Coin Toss Victory

The SEC women’s basketball regular season ended in a tie between Texas and South Carolina, with the Gamecocks emerging as the No. 1 overall seed after winning the coin toss. The tournament will begin on March 5 in Greenville, S.C., where both top seeds receive first-round byes and won’t play until March 7.

The three remaining tiebreaker scenarios are head-to-head results, conference win-loss records, and the coin toss. South Carolina’s sole losses came to Texas, with whom they split their two meetings, including a convincing 17-point defeat in January. The Gamecocks have since avenged that loss, winning four points against Texas in February.

The SEC is not alone in using a coin toss to determine seeding; the NFL and NBA also employ this method as part of their tiebreaker procedures. In contrast, the WNBA uses more detailed criteria when head-to-head results are tied, including point differential and winning percentage against .500-plus teams. The 2025 SEC Tournament will feature a unique quarterfinal round schedule, with the No. 1 seed playing six hours earlier than the No. 2 seed.
