South Carolina apologized publicly to LSU and star guard Flau’Jae Johnson after an in-arena DJ played a song by the late father of Johnson during their game. The song, “Cut Friends” by rapper Camouflage (real name Jason Johnson), was chosen despite Johnson’s father being killed six months before his daughter’s birth.
DJ T.O., who plays music during South Carolina women’s basketball games, faced backlash after fans criticized the choice. In a social media post, Johnson called the song choice “nasty behavior” and responded to LSU fans’ outrage by stating that people would find something to be mad about it.
South Carolina Athletics issued a formal apology, noting that the incident was unfortunately upsetting to Johnson’s family and LSU while acknowledging it was disrespectful to both programs. The department also suspended DJ T.O. for one game and emphasized that she will receive further education on expectations moving forward.
DJ T.O. later apologized on social media, emphasizing that his intent is always to have fun and respect everyone during performances.
Johnson, a prominent LSU player averaging 19.6 points per game, faced criticism from LSU fans for scoring only 13 points in their loss. The Tigers’ performance marked their first win against South Carolina since 2012.
South Carolina’s next home game is scheduled for February 2 against Auburn.
