South Korea Fighter Jets Drop Bombs on Homes, Injuring 15

South Korean fighter jets accidentally dropped eight bombs on a civilian district during military exercises in Pocheon, injuring 15 people and damaging houses and a church. The Air Force said the accident was due to a pilot entering incorrect coordinates.

The incident occurred during joint live-fire exercises linked to upcoming South Korea-US joint exercises called the Freedom Shield drills. Residents have protested about military drills for years, citing potential danger from nearby training grounds.

Authorities suspended live-fire exercises until there is a clear understanding of what went wrong. The government and military are urged to come up with measures to prevent any further civilian damage.

Fifteen people were wounded, including two who were seriously hurt. A resident described the scene as “the unthinkable” and called for the government and military to take action.

The incident reflects growing concerns about military drills in the area, where residents have protested about the disturbance and potential danger from nearby training grounds. The Freedom Shield drills aim to strengthen the readiness of the alliance for threats such as North Korea.
