South Korea fired warning shots after North Korean troops breached the demilitarized zone (DMZ) border for the second time in 10 months. According to the South Korean military, approximately 10 North Korean soldiers crossed into the South on Tuesday and returned after being warned with a broadcast and shots fired.
The incident occurred at about 5pm local time and was not a deliberate breach of the peace, officials said. The site of the intrusion was a wooded area where the signs for the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) were not clearly visible, and the North Korean troops were carrying construction tools.
Tensions between the two Koreas have been high in recent months due to North Korea’s military nuclear capabilities and its alignment with Russia. The DMZ is the world’s most heavily armed border, with an estimated 2 million mines peppered along it.
This incident is the latest in a series of incidents that highlight the ongoing tension between Seoul and Pyongyang. However, South Korean officials say they are monitoring the situation closely and taking necessary measures to maintain peace.
