South Korea Plane Fire Forces Evacuation of 176 Passengers

A plane operated by an Airbus caught fire at an airport in South Korea’s city of Busan, prompting the evacuation of all 176 people on board. Four individuals sustained injuries as they escaped during an attempt to extinguish the flames on inflatable slides near takeoff time. The fire, which originated near the tail end of a Hong Kong-bound flight shortly before departure, quickly spread to the fuselage. Firefighters arrived minutes after the incident and were seen actively working to control the flames.

The fire broke out around 22:26 local time (13:26 GMT) on Tuesday at Gimhae International Airport, according to South Korea’s fire authorities. Water was later used to douse the flames. The plane carried 169 passengers and seven crew members when the incident occurred less than a month after a tragic air disaster involving Jeju Air, which claimed the lives of 179 people. Two individuals survived this latest event.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Air Busan is a budget airline operated by Asiana Airlines, while Busan’s airport is located approximately 315 kilometers (195 miles) south-east of Seoul.
