South Korea’s military deployed a warning response after about 10 North Korean troops crossed the military demarcation line in the eastern area of the demilitarized zone (DMZ). The Joint Chiefs of Staff stated that they conducted warning broadcasts and fired shots into the air, but no injuries were reported.
The incident occurred around 5:00 pm local time and comes after a similar event in June 2024, where North Korean soldiers carrying work tools breached the forbidden zone. Following the earlier incident, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Pyongyang and signed a defensive pact with North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong Un.
The agreement states that if one side is placed under war situations due to an armed invasion, the other side will provide military assistance without delay. In October 2024, the Pentagon confirmed that North Korea had sent troops to Russia amid Ukraine’s ongoing war.
The incident highlights ongoing tensions between South Korea and North Korea, with both sides closely monitoring each other’s activities.
