South Korea Teeters on Brink of Impeachment Amid Martial Law Crisis

South Korean opposition leader Lee Jae-myung has called for President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment, citing a need to restore order in the country following his short-lived imposition of martial law. The move, which was rescinded just six hours later, plunged the nation into a constitutional crisis and sparked widespread calls for Yoon’s resignation.

Lee, who is leading the Democratic Party, believes that impeaching Yoon is the fastest way to end the confusion caused by the presidential address, in which he claimed a North Korean hack compromised the National Election Commission’s computer system. However, experts have disputed this claim, with the commission’s Secretary General denying any evidence of election fraud.

Yoon faces separate criminal investigation over his declaration of martial law, and opposition parties are planning to hold a vote on impeachment at 5 p.m. local time on Saturday. The Democratic Party requires at least eight votes from the ruling People Power Party (PPP) to pass the bill, which would send the case to the Constitutional Court for review.

Lee has urged opposition members to join him in voting yes on impeachment, warning that history will remember their decision. A successful impeachment could lead to Yoon’s removal from office or reinstatement, pending a review by the Constitutional Court, which has up to six months to make its ruling.
