South Korean Exchange Bithumb Accidentally Credits Users With Billions of Dollars’ Worth of Bitcoin

A South Korean exchange accidentally gave out billions of dollars’ worth of Bitcoin to users instead of a tiny cash reward, triggering a flash crash in the platform’s listed value of the token.

A “Random Box” giveaway on Bithumb, South Korea’s second-largest cryptocurrency exchange, mistakenly sent 2,000 BTC apiece to users, worth around $142 million at writing. The error was detected and corrected within five minutes, but not before users sold off some of the funds, leading to a sharp price crash on the exchange.
