South Korea’s Acting Leader Han Set to Run for President

South Korean acting leader Han Duck-soo is expected to resign on Thursday, clearing the way for him to become the country’s permanent president. According to Yonhap News Agency, Han will address the nation upon his resignation and formally announce his candidacy for the June 3 election.

Han, 75, plans to contest the election after opinion polls showed an increase in support for him as a candidate. He will leverage his higher profile as acting leader, having taken office after former President Yoon Suk Yeol’s removal over a declaration of martial law.

Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok is expected to take over as acting president after Han’s resignation. The news comes amid growing speculation about Han’s intentions and the increasing support for him in opinion polls.
