South Korea’s Acting President Urges Calm Ahead of Impeachment Ruling

South Korea’s acting president, Han Duck-soo, has urged calm as the country waits for the Constitutional Court’s decision on the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol. The court will announce its ruling on April 4.

Han made the call at a ministerial meeting on safety, warning politicians against comments that could incite violence. He emphasized that the government will not tolerate any illegal or violent acts and urged calm acceptance of the decision based on the rule of law.

Yoon was impeached by parliament in December over his declaration of martial law without justifiable grounds. The Constitutional Court’s ruling will determine whether Yoon should be removed from office permanently or reinstated. If he is ousted, a new presidential election must be held within 60 days.

Police have increased security around the court, restricting access to the area and preparing for potential clashes between pro- and anti-Yoon supporters. The police chief has vowed to arrest those who vandalize facilities, threaten justices, or assault police officers.

The opposition parties have brought a motion to impeach the finance minister, Choi Sang-mok, amid deepening political strife. Foreign embassies have issued alerts calling for extra caution, with the US embassy canceling routine consular operations on April 3 and 4.
