South Korea’s President Faced with Insurrection Investigation and Impeachment Vote

South Korea’s police have launched an investigation into President Yoon Suk-Yeol for his recently retracted martial law declaration, amid opposition from lawmakers and a potential impeachment vote. The move marks the first time a sitting president in South Korean history has faced insurrection charges. If convicted, President Yoon could face the death penalty.

The controversy began when President Yoon declared emergency martial law on Tuesday, citing pro-North Korea forces, but lifted it just six hours later after pressure from his own party and opposition lawmakers. The move sparked a wave of protests and led to an impeachment vote by Saturday.

Despite this, all members of the ruling People Power Party are expected to vote against the motion, as it requires eight out of nine lawmakers to pass. Opposition lawmakers submitted a formal complaint to launch the investigation.

President Yoon, who was a political novice when he became leader in 2022, is facing criticism for his handling of the crisis and his approval ratings have been dipping in recent months. The incident has sparked concerns about the country’s democratic institutions and its close alliance with the US.
