Comedy Central’s popular animated series “South Park” returned on Wednesday with a vengeance in its Season 27 premiere. The show took aim at both the network it airs on and President Donald Trump. Trey Parker and Matt Stone used satire to critique the current state of “wokeness” and the planned acquisition of Paramount Global by Skydance Media.
The episode centers around Jesus, who was brought back due to a lawsuit with residents of South Park protesting his appearance in local schools. In the show, Jesus criticizes the network’s parent company, Paramount, referencing its pending sale and comparing it unfavorably to another company that has changed hands.
President Trump is also portrayed as a character suing residents for $5 billion after they protest Jesus’ appearance. The Trump character is depicted as a sensitive bully who threatens to tariff or sue anyone who disagrees with him. One scene even superimposes an image of the president over animation, depicting him in bed with Satan.
The show’s creators have previously taken on similar characters and themes, including Saddam Hussein in 1999. In this episode, Satan tells the Trump character that he reminds him of someone from his past.
A statement from White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers downplayed the episode, calling it “uninspired” and saying President Trump has made more promises than any other president. Meanwhile, Parker and Stone have expressed dissatisfaction with the planned acquisition, stating it’s “a s**tshow” that’s affecting their contract negotiations. The creators have since reached a $1.5 billion deal to stream all “South Park” episodes on Paramount+.
