A group of homeowners and renters have filed at least five lawsuits against Southern California Edison (SCE), alleging that the company failed to de-energize its electrical equipment despite red flag warnings from the National Weather Service.
The complaints claim that SCE’s actions, or lack thereof, led to the devastating Eaton Fire, which destroyed over 7,000 structures and left multiple people dead. The lawsuits also allege that SCE failed to properly inspect and maintain its electric facilities, prioritizing profits over safety.
According to the complaints, SCE was aware of an extreme fire risk on January 7 but deliberately chose not to de-energize all of its equipment despite warnings from the National Weather Service. This reckless behavior is said to have contributed significantly to the spread of the fire.
The plaintiffs claim that SCE’s actions were a gross negligence in an area highly vulnerable to wildfires, particularly with documented weather alerts and high wind risks.
The lawsuit seeks compensatory damages for the plaintiffs, as well as punitive damages to punish the company for its alleged conduct. The Eaton Fire has already burned over 14,000 acres, making it one of the most devastating wildfires in recent history.
Investigations are currently underway to determine if SCE’s electrical equipment contributed to the fire ignitions. The company’s CEO has confirmed that they will be transparent with their findings and have promised to cooperate fully with the investigations.
