Southwest Airlines Introduces Checked Bag Fees Starting May 28th

Southwest Airlines will start charging checked bag fees on new reservations starting May 28th. The fees are as follows: $35 for the first bag and $45 for a second. However, some passengers will still be eligible for free checked bags.

According to Southwest, Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred Members and customers traveling on Business Select or Choice Extra fares when that bundle is introduced later this year, will get up to two free checked bags. Rapid Rewards A-List Members and credit card holders will receive one free checked bag.

The airline’s changes are part of a larger overhaul of its policies, which also include ending its open seating policy and adding extra legroom seats. This marks the end of an era for Southwest’s unique policy of not charging checked bag fees. Passengers can now plan their flights accordingly to account for the new fees.
