Southwest Flight Forced to Abort Landing Due to Business Jet on Runway

A close call at Chicago Midway International Airport has raised concerns about runway incursions. A Southwest Airlines pilot was forced to abort their landing after a business jet entered the runway without authorization, forcing the plane to pull up just 50 feet from touching down.

According to aviation experts, the pilot’s decision to perform a “go-around” maneuver was crucial in avoiding a potential crash. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the incident and has identified Midway as one of 45 airports being audited for runway incursions.

The business jet, owned by Ohio-based FlexJet, was warned by air traffic control nine times to hold position away from center runway 31. However, it appears that the pilot ignored these instructions. The FAA is reviewing the incident to identify potential gaps in procedures and equipment safety recommendations.

Southwest Airlines has said that the crew followed safety procedures and the flight landed without incident. However, Congressman Jesús “Chuy” García has called for a full investigation into the near-miss, citing concerns about airport safety.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is also investigating the incident, which highlights the importance of pilots following air traffic controllers’ instructions. The NTSB has stated that failure to do so can result in license revocation.
