Southwest Introduces Groundbreaking Safety Rule for Portable Chargers

Southwest Airlines is implementing a first-of-its-kind safety policy requiring passengers to keep portable charging devices in plain sight during flights. The airline cites the risk of lithium-ion battery fires as the reason for the updated rule, following several incidents this year.

According to Southwest, the policy aims to prevent overheating or catching fire by separating battery packs and making it easier for crew members to intervene.

The Federal Aviation Administration currently allows portable batteries in passenger baggage but has not set a specific requirement for restrictions or separation.

However, with 19 lithium-ion battery incidents reported this year involving extreme heat, fire, or smoke, the airline is taking proactive measures to ensure safety.

Southwest’s new policy makes it the first US carrier to implement such a rule, although some international airlines have similar regulations in place.
