Sovereignty emerged victorious in the 46th running of the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga Race Course, beating second-place finisher Journalism by three lengths. The Godolphin-owned horse, trained by Bill Mott and ridden by Junior Alvarado, was favored to win after a strong showing in the Preakness Stakes.
Journalism, owned by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and trained by Michael McCarthy, had been considered the top contender going into the race. However, he struggled to keep up with Sovereignty’s pace, ultimately falling short.
A rivalry between the two horses has emerged, with both trainers expressing confidence in their respective horses’ abilities. McCarthy said his horse ran well, despite being behind a fresher opponent, while Wellman of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners praised Journalism’s performance.
Rispoli, Journalism’s jockey, attributed his horse’s energy to his strong finish, but admitted he was disappointed with the loss. The trainers hope for another meeting between their horses in the Travers Stakes or Breeders’ Cup Classic later this season.
