Space2Sea Antarctica Live: Exploring the Ocean and Outer Space with Celebrities and Astronauts

A live broadcast from the Drake Passage, known for its turbulent waters, marked the first-ever milestone in a series produced by FUTURE of SPACE (FoS). The panel discussion, titled “Space2Sea Antarctica,” featured astronauts Scott Kelly, José Hernández, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, and “Star Trek” actor William Shatner. Filmmaker Céline Cousteau also joined the conversation.

The event aimed to inspire young people’s curiosity about space, the ocean, and their own backyards. Over 46 countries were set to tune in as students asked questions on various topics, from exploring new frontiers to overcoming physical challenges in space.

Tyson emphasized his commitment to explaining complex concepts to others, saying, “I feel a sense of duty to bring the universe down to Earth for all those who are curious.” He encouraged young people to pursue their passions and not be discouraged by obstacles.

Cousteau shared her experience encountering a humpback whale while diving in Hawaii, highlighting the importance of perspective and curiosity. She stressed that exploring doesn’t require going far from home but rather embracing it wherever you are.

The discussion also touched on the practical constraints behind advances in space travel and colonizing other planets. Kelly noted that funding and interest from politicians pose significant obstacles to achieving these goals. Hernández, who faced 11 rejections before being selected as an astronaut, advised students to remain optimistic and persistent in pursuing their dreams.

Shatner inspired young people to focus on education, using his own experiences as a catalyst for motivation. The panel concluded with the group agreeing that exploring new frontiers requires hard work, determination, and passion.
