SpaceX has successfully launched its first constellation of direct-to-phone satellites into Earth’s orbit, completing the initial orbital shell with 20 satellites. The launch from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base on December 5 enabled direct-to-cellphone connectivity for subscribers anywhere on the planet.
The satellites, powered by a Falcon 9 rocket, will provide internet connectivity in remote areas, with Elon Musk noting that bandwidth per beam is currently limited to around 10 Mb. However, future constellations will be more capable.
The service will initially offer text-only connectivity until next year, when voice and data services become available. Support for IoT devices, such as smart home gadgets, is also planned.
Starlink uses standard LTE/4G protocols compatible with most phones, partnering with mobile operators like T-Mobile in the US. The system leverages laser-based optical communication to achieve faster data rates and improved security.
