SpaceX Crew-9 Astronauts Meet Dolphin Welcome Committee

A pod of bottlenose dolphins took an interest in SpaceX’s Crew Dragon “Freedom” as it splashed down on Tuesday, March 18. The crew of four, including NASA astronauts Nick Hague and Suni Williams, who has a particular affinity for the ocean, were recovered by SpaceX support team members.

The marine mammals seemed curious about the spacecraft, making for a rare sight. However, what made this encounter even more unique was that one of the crew members had a strong connection to the sea.

Williams originally planned to return with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft “Calypso” but was reassigned to the Dragon due to issues with the Starliner trip. This experience might have contributed to her enthusiasm for dolphins, who appeared to be interested in the recovered capsule.

The recovery team successfully hoisted the Dragon on board a ship using a crane, securing the crew before lifting off. The scene showcases the astronauts’ connection to space and their appreciation for the ocean’s importance in our planet’s ecosystem.
