A SpaceX Dragon cargo ship successfully returned to Earth on Saturday night, creating a sonic boom that was reportedly heard by people in the Los Angeles area. The capsule re-entered the atmosphere over the ocean, approximately 25 miles off the coast of Camp Pendleton, and splashed down without incident.
Eyewitnesses captured stunning footage of the capsule from various locations, including a videographer from Eyewitness News who shot video from the roof of their studio in Glendale. The capsule was visible to the naked eye for hundreds of miles after re-entry.
Residents in the area received numerous calls to the newsroom, with many reporting they heard a loud boom or sonic noise shortly before 11 p.m. local time.
