SpaceX successfully launched the Amazon Project Kuiper KF-02 mission on Monday, August 11, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The Falcon 9 rocket carrying 24 satellites lifted off at 8:35 a.m. after several delays due to weather conditions.
The launch comes as part of SpaceX’s efforts to provide broadband connectivity to underserved communities around the world. According to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, Project Kuiper will be the second key player in low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity, targeting 400 million households worldwide that lack access to modern internet services.
The Falcon 9 first-stage booster successfully landed on a SpaceX drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean about eight minutes after liftoff, marking its maiden flight. The launch was the 67th orbital rocket launch this year from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station and NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.
In a statement, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell welcomed back NASA astronauts Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Takuya Onishi, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov after their Crew-10 mission from the International Space Station earlier this month.
