The United Arab Emirates’ AI-powered space technology champion, Space42, launched its new Thuraya-4 satellite on January 3 using a Falcon 9 mission from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The all-electric satellite is equipped with a 12-meter L-band antenna to provide narrowband connectivity for mobile devices across Europe, Africa, Central Asia, and the Middle East.
Space42 ordered Thuraya-4 in 2020 to replace aging Boeing-built spacecraft in geostationary orbit. The company’s CEO stated that the new satellite will help unlock innovative AI-powered services for its global client base. SpaceX, which successfully launched the Falcon 9 mission, is targeting 175-180 launches in 2025.
The Thuraya-4 launch comes after Airbus faced schedule and cost issues with its space business. The satellite was initially slated for a launch in 2023 but was delayed multiple times. Space42’s managing director highlighted the company’s focus on developing hybrid connectivity and geospatial services for emerging markets like autonomous vehicles.
SpaceX has also launched two more satellites, Al Yah-4 and Al Yah-5, scheduled for 2027 and 2028, respectively. The company is building a multi-orbit strategy with Space42, including low Earth orbit spacecraft planned for the future.
