SpaceX Starlink Satellite 34343 Mysteriously Breaks apart

Starlink satellite 34343, operated by SpaceX, experienced an anomaly on Sunday at around 560 km above Earth, resulting in loss of communications with the satellite. The incident was described as a “fragment creation event” by orbital intelligence agency LeoLabs. Following the event, Starlink stated that it would continue to monitor the satellite and track any debris.

According to LeoLabs, radar systems detected tens of objects in the vicinity of the satellite after the anomaly occurred. The independent space-situational-awareness provider believes that the event was likely caused by an internal energetic source rather than a collision with other satellites or debris.

Starlink experienced a similar incident last December. The company has plans to launch thousands more Starlink LEO satellites, raising concerns about the potential risks of rapid unplanned disassembly incidents. As SpaceX prepares for its highly anticipated IPO this summer, fewer such incidents would be beneficial.
