Spain secured their spot in the European Championship semi-finals after defeating Switzerland 2-0 in a thrilling match. The world champions came from behind to win, scoring two goals in the second half courtesy of Athenea del Castillo and Claudia Pina.
Switzerland dominated the first half, with Nadine Riesen’s challenge on Mariona Caldentey forcing Spain into their first penalty attempt. However, the spot-kick was missed, followed by a similar effort from Alexia Putellas.
Despite struggling to break down the Swiss defence in the opening 45 minutes, Spain eventually found their rhythm. Del Castillo scored with just three minutes and 24 seconds of her substitution into play, before Pina sealed the win with a sublime curling strike in the 71st minute.
In the post-match press conference, Aitana Bonmati attributed Spain’s success to their calmness and confidence under pressure. The team leader also emphasized that winning was not just about dominating possession, but also about competing over the full 90 minutes at the highest level. With a semi-final spot against either France or Germany on Wednesday, Spain looks set to continue their quest for European Championship glory.
