Spain on High Alert as Wildfires Rage Across 14 Blazes

Spain is under “extreme risk” from new wildfires, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has warned, as firefighters battle 14 major blazes. Temperatures are expected to reach 40C in the north coast, with over 1,500 sq km (579 sq miles) of land already devastated by flames.

The heatwave has spread across southeastern Europe, prompting fires in Spain, Portugal, Greece, France, and the Balkans. A heatwave is forecasted until Monday, with temperatures of up to 44C and moderate winds.

Wildfires are becoming more frequent and intense due to human-induced climate change. The EU data shows over 6,290 sq km (2,429 sq miles) of land burnt across the bloc since the beginning of the year.

Firefighters are dealing with an active front on the Greek island of Chios, which could take weeks to restore damaged infrastructure. Greece has activated the EU’s civil protection mechanism, requesting assistance for its wildfire-prone areas.

The situation highlights the increasing threat of wildfires in southern Europe during the summer months.
