Spain overcame missing two penalties to beat Switzerland 2-0 in Bern on Friday, securing their spot in the Women’s Euro semifinals for just the second time in history. The world champions broke Swiss resistance with two goals in a five-minute spell midway through the second half.
Forward Athenea del Castillo scored the opening goal, and Clàdia Pina added a superb second to seal the win. It was Spain’s first-ever knockout win at a Women’s Euro after previous attempts in 2013, 2017, and 2022 quarterfinals, as well as the 1997 semifinals.
Spain’s victory was a remarkable turnaround from their loss to Germany in the bronze medal game at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Captain Athenea said her team was happy to have reached the semifinals and vowed to give it their all against France or Germany in Zurich on Wednesday.
