A historic mosque-turned-cathedral in southern Spain’s Cordoba city reopened on Saturday after a fire broke out the previous day. The rapid response of local firefighters contained the blaze, saving the iconic site from destruction. The monument, built between the 8th and 10th centuries, is considered a jewel of Islamic architecture.
The fire started at around 9pm on Friday and was widely shared on social media, evoking memories of the devastating Notre-Dame cathedral fire in Paris in 2019. However, thanks to the quick action of Cordoba’s firefighters, the site has been saved, with only the area where the fire occurred cordoned off from the public.
Cordoba’s mayor described the intervention as “magnificent” and praised the bravery of the firefighters who worked tirelessly to bring the blaze under control. Officials are now expected to provide an update on the extent of the damage later in the day.
