Spanish Football Federation Boss Accused of Sexual Assault

Former Spanish football federation boss Luis Rubiales is standing trial for allegedly kissing women’s team player Jenni Hermoso without consent during the 2023 World Cup final presentation ceremony. Rubiales claims the kiss was consensual, while Hermoso says she felt disrespected and “stained one of the happiest days” of her life.

Rubiales is also accused of trying to downplay the incident, with prosecutors seeking a jail sentence of two and a half years and a fine of €50,000. He resigned as federation boss after the scandal broke, citing a “witch hunt” by feminists.

Three other defendants – women’s national team coach Jorge Vilda, sports director Albert Luque, and marketing head Rubén Rivera – are charged with coercion for allegedly pressuring Hermoso to support Rubiales’ account of the incident.
