Spain is embracing a new trend in renewable energy – DIY solar balcony panels. The concept, known as “balcony power,” has already gained popularity among German homeowners, with about 1.5 million installations on balconies across the country.
Manufacturers claim that installing a couple of 300-watt panels can save households up to 30% on their electricity bills. With an initial cost of €400-800 and no installation fees, these panels can pay for themselves within six years.
Spanish cities, where two-thirds of the population live in apartments, have seen significant advantages in adopting this technology. Without needing consent from majority building residents or paying for certification, balcony power allows for flexible and affordable solar energy production.
The EU’s 42% renewable energy target may be achievable, says SolarPower Europe director Michael Schmela. Germany, Italy, Poland, and Spain are leading the charge in solar installations, with France seeing increasing popularity of balcony power.
While some towns offer small financial incentives, experts believe that battery development and greater cohesion between wind, solar, and other renewables are needed to meet energy demands. With 1.5 million Germans already embracing this technology, Spain is poised to follow suit as the technology continues to gain momentum.
