NASA is set to launch two new missions that will explore the history of the universe and study the Sun’s solar wind. The Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer (SPHEREx) space telescope will search for signs of life in our galaxy, while the Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere (PUNCH) mission will study the Sun’s corona.
The launch is scheduled for February 28, with a window opening at 10:09 p.m. EST. The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will carry both missions into space from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
SPHEREx aims to explore how the universe evolved and search for key ingredients of life within our galaxy. PUNCH, on the other hand, consists of four small spacecraft that will observe how the Sun’s corona transitions into solar wind.
NASA has planned several prelaunch events, including a science overview news conference on February 25 and a prelaunch news conference on February 27. The launch coverage will be broadcast live on NASA+ and available on the agency’s website.
The public can also attend the launch virtually through NASA’s virtual guest program, which includes curated launch resources, notifications about related opportunities or changes, and a stamp for the NASA virtual guest passport following launch.
