Steven Spielberg has spoken out about the challenging production of his iconic 1975 film Jaws, revealing that filming was a disaster-plagued adventure despite the movie’s eventual success. The director shared his experiences in a video message for the National Geographic world premiere of the new documentary “Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story”.
Spielberg, who directed the film at just 27 years old, had to overcome numerous challenges including a mechanical shark that was more temperamental than any movie star he has worked with. The production budget tripled to $9 million and the shooting schedule stretched from 55 to 159 days.
However, Spielberg credits global theatrical audiences for saving his career after the film’s release in 1975. He also praises the iconic two-note motif in the Jaws soundtrack composed by John Williams, which contributed to primal fears about unseen predators being afoot.
Spielberg considers “Jaws” a seminal experience of his entire career, one that has stood the test of time despite five decades passing since its initial release. The documentary “Jaws @ 50” is set to premiere on National Geographic on July 10, followed by releases on Disney+ and Hulu.
