Spirit Airlines has introduced a stricter dress code in its contract of carriage, potentially forcing passengers to be grounded at the gate if they violate the rules. The airline now bans individuals who are “barefoot or inadequately clothed,” with “inadequate coverage” or exposure to private parts like breasts or buttocks. Passengers violating these guidelines could face being denied boarding, taken off a flight, and without a refund.
The new policy follows a viral incident in October 2024 where two women were removed from their Spirit Airlines flight for wearing crop tops. Earlier, the airline had been less specific about what constituted “lewd, obscene, or offensive” attire. Other airlines have similarly strict rules; for example, Delta Airlines may remove passengers if their conduct, attire, hygiene, or odor creates an offense to others. Spirit has not responded to requests for comment on the updated dress code.
