Spirit Airlines Updates Passenger Contract to Reflect Modern Dress Codes

Spirit Airlines has updated its “passenger contract of carriage” to include detailed guidelines for acceptable clothing. The revised policy now specifies that guests may not board the aircraft, be required to leave, or face baggage issues if they are barefoot, wearing see-through clothing, or have inadequate coverage over private areas like breasts or buttocks. It also prohibits lewd, obscene, or offensive attire, including body art. However, the updated contract does not address tattoos or clarify what constitutes “lewd” clothing.

Previously, the policy allowed passengers to be denied entry or removed from the plane if they were barefoot, wearing inadequate clothing, or had lewd attire without specifying tattoos or defining lewdness. The changes aim to align with modern dress codes but leave some aspects ambiguous.

The updated rules come after reports of women being Removals from flights for wearing crop tops under sweaters when the air conditioning was off. Two of these women claimed they were told to wear something else, but they were ultimately removed without refunds. Spirit did not respond to Axios’ request for comment on the new policy.
