Spirit Airlines Updates Rules Prohibiting Clothing and Body Art on Flights Out of Detroit

Spirit Airlines has updated its rules for passengers traveling out of Detroit, introducing restrictions on clothing and body art. The airline now prohibits boarding or exiting a flight if a passenger is “barefoot, inadequately clothed (e.g., see-through clothing), or has lewd, obscene, or offensive body art.” Recent reports indicate that two California women were denied boarding for wearing crop tops during a Spirit Airlines flight. Previously, the airline’s contract prohibited certain types of clothing but did not specify examples or prohibit body art. The updated rules, effective as of January 2025, aim to enforce these standards more strictly. While Spirit Airlines flies primarily from Detroit Metropolitan Airport, it does not operate from other Michigan airports such as Lansing, Grand Rapids, Flint, Kalamazoo, or Traverse City. Passengers traveling to Michigan may need to be cautious about what they wear during their flights.
