Spotify’s latest addition, the “Wrapped AI podcast,” has left music lovers underwhelmed. The app’s annual roundup features a new audio companion that uses Google’s NotebookLM technology to recapture users’ listening habits in a conversational manner.
The feature includes two NPR-inflected voices that go through users’ listening highlights, elaborating on their moods and interests throughout the year. However, it feels more like an informative summary than a personalized experience.
Former Spotify data alchemist Glenn McDonald suggests that the purpose of this new feature isn’t entirely clear and may be focused on brand virality rather than user engagement.
Spotify’s personalization features have become increasingly gimmicky, with AI-powered tools such as “DJ X” and “AI Playlist” that encourage users to stick within their comfort zones. These features have proven effective as marketing strategies but lack the discovery and exploration that music lovers crave.
The app’s focus on catering to user preferences rather than encouraging curiosity has led to a narcissistic and dull approach to art. As McDonald notes, streaming services should provide access to all world’s music, not just what users already know.
