Astronomer’s Photo Captures Jupiter at Its Best
Matt Frank captured a stunning photo of Jupiter near its brightest point in the sky in downtown Boston last night. The image, which shows Jupiter aligned with the moon and a star design, showcases the planet’s prominent position.
Jupiter is currently at opposition, meaning it is at its brightest point for the year, following a 13-month cycle. This alignment occurs when Jupiter is on the opposite side of Earth from the sun, making it nearly fully illuminated by our perspective.
As a result of this timing, last year’s opposition occurred earlier than usual, and this year’s won’t happen until January 10, 2026. However, for now, Jupiter remains visible in the sky, accompanied by other celestial bodies such as Venus, which can be seen for an hour or so after sunset.
Mobile apps like Night Sky and Sky Guide can help identify these celestial wonders using a smartphone, allowing users to capture their own stunning images like Matt Frank’s.
