Spring allergy season is affecting 80 million Americans, making it a common time for those with seasonal allergies to take action. CVS pharmacist Nawaz Mussaleen shares his insights on the most common spring allergies, how they peak in New York state, and effective over-the-counter medication options.
Mussaleen notes that the most prevalent spring allergens include tree pollen, grass, and weed pollen. In New York state, symptoms typically peak between late March to early May.
When it comes to alleviating symptoms, Mussaleen recommends using over-the-counter antihistamines or decongestants. He also suggests considering immunotherapy or allergy shots for those with severe allergies.
In addition to medication, Mussaleen advises taking steps to minimize or prevent allergies in the home. This includes keeping windows closed during peak pollen hours, using HEPA air purifiers, and removing weeds that can harbor allergens.
