Bruce Springsteen delivered a three-minute speech critical of President Trump during his second concert in Manchester, England. The rocker reiterated his stance that the US is experiencing “altered realities” and must be addressed.
Springsteen stated that in America, people are being persecuted for their right to free speech and dissent. He also criticized the country’s richest individuals for abandoning the world’s poorest children to illness and death. The singer claimed that Trump’s government is rolling back historic civil rights legislation, abandoning allies, and defunding universities that refuse to conform to their ideology.
Springsteen expressed frustration with his own elected representatives, stating they have failed to protect the American people from abuse. However, he maintained hope for a better future, citing James Baldwin’s quote: “In this world, there isn’t as much humanity as one would like, but there’s enough.”
The Land of Hope and Dreams Tour concert closed with a rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Chimes of Freedom,” a song Springsteen last performed in 1988. The E Street Band will return to Manchester on May 20 for their third show.
