Sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson Withdraws from US Championships

Sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson has pulled out of the 100-meter semifinals at the USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships. The decision came after reports surfaced of her arrest at Seattle’s SeaTac Airport on Sunday, where she allegedly got into a physical altercation with her boyfriend, sprinter Christian Coleman.

Coleman declined to press charges against Richardson, who had reportedly shoved him several times and thrown headphones in his direction while he walked away. Richardson has a wildcard entry into the 100-meter event at next month’s World Athletics Outdoor Championships in Tokyo.

Despite this, it remains unclear whether Richardson would have competed in the semifinals even if she hadn’t been arrested. However, she was still entered for the 200-meter event at the US championships, scheduled to take place on Sunday. This marks the second time Richardson has faced off-track issues at a major meet in Eugene; she won the 100 at the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2021 but was disqualified due to testing positive for cannabis.
