Spy Thriller “The Amateur” Delivers on Malek’s Lead Performance

The Amateur, starring Rami Malek as officebound CIA cryptographer Charles Heller, is a clever spin on the classic globetrotting thriller genre. After his wife’s murder, Heller transforms from an ordinary man to an agent of retribution, relying on ingenuity and intelligence rather than conventional violence.

Malek shines in the lead role, bringing an introspective demeanor that makes him a good fit for this type of character. His performance is complemented by a talented supporting cast, including Laurence Fishburne as a world-weary spy and Holt McCallany and Julianne Nicholson as Heller’s superiors at the CIA.

The story follows Heller’s journey from his ordinary life to his newfound role as a skilled killer, complete with realistic plot twists and turns. Director James Hawes effectively evokes an appealing throwback spy story that seamlessly cuts between Heller’s global adventures and its repercussions back home.

While some supporting characters feel underutilized, the film ultimately delivers on its promise of a well-told tale of espionage and retribution. With Malek’s standout performance leading the way, The Amateur is a compelling addition to the spy thriller genre.
