Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has shed light on the ending of the show’s third season, which left audiences with a surprising twist. In the final scene, Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) encounters Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett playing ddakji in Los Angeles.
The unexpected cameo sparked rumors of an American Squid Game spinoff, but Hwang Dong-hyuk denies this was his intention. “I didn’t end it on that note to leave room for further stories,” he told the Hollywood Reporter. Instead, he aimed to highlight the cyclical nature of systems created in late capitalism.
Hwang’s decision to cast a woman as the American recruiter adds a powerful contrast to the original Korean series. He chose Cate Blanchett due to her presence and charisma on screen. “She can instantly grab your attention with a single stare,” he explained.
The creator has no plans for another Squid Game season, but he would be interested in watching an American adaptation if it happens. Hwang is a fan of director David Fincher’s work and thinks his take on the show could be intriguing.
Squid Game seasons 1-3 are now available on Netflix, offering fans more insights into the world of the popular series through interviews like this one with Hwang Dong-hyuk.
