Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has shared an alternate ending idea for Season 3, revealing that he initially envisioned Gi-hun’s character surviving the game and pursuing his family in America. However, as he continued writing the story, he decided to change this plan due to new circumstances and a desire to make a stronger impact.
In contrast, the actual Season 3 finale saw Gi-hun sacrifice himself to save the baby in a move that many viewers found unsatisfying. The original ending Hwang had envisioned would have been a more fitting conclusion, with Gi-hun’s choice mirroring his decision at the end of Season 1: to choose between pursuing the game’s destruction or moving on with his life and family.
The show’s disappointing audience score for Season 3 has led some to wonder if it will continue, but Hwang has pitched a prequel series set between Seasons 1 and 2. There is also potential for future seasons, as well as an American Squid Game spin-off that has not been confirmed yet.
